Organize the collections in a coherent manner, and ensure that damaged or fragile tapes and/or films receive proper conservation treatments. Process and describe collections on archival containers and in the Encoded Archival Description (EAD) database, which includes the following: an information page, content and scope statement, an inventory and an item-by-item index. Digitize selected holding for patron access and donor needs on a case-by-case basis. Write and disseminate press releases and promotional materials to raise awareness for the Utah Independent Film Archive and AV Archive. Meet with local filmmakers, both student and professional, and collect original works from these artists. Maintain statistical records of the section's holdings and transactions and if necessary be ready to prepare reports based on these records. Advanced degree in a related field or a conservation certificate plus additional years of experience preferred. Knowledge of conservation and preservation principles and demonstrated ability to perform essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description, including the ability to implement proper preservation packing and shipping procedures, required. Demonstrated effective human relations and communication skills, as well as experience supervising, teaching and training others. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: At the time of employment, the incumbent must be able to perform a broad range of complex book and paper conservation treatments, manage tasks at hand, and complete work in a timely fashion. The position requires the incumbent to carry out thorough examinations of objects or collections in preparation for treatment, and to document treatment proposals and final reports in writing and with photographic images. The incumbent must be able to work independently and with supervision on a wide range of book and paper conservation treatments. The incumbent is required to complete projects by providing proper housings for treated objects, including boxing, matting, and polyester film encapsulation. PREFERENCES: It is desirable for the incumbent to be able to perform a complex range of book and paper conservation techniques, including: dry cleaning, consolidation, flattening, mending, filling (including leaf-casting), toning, mount repair and removal, lining, tape removal, stain reduction, washing, deacidification, bleaching, sizing, use of enzymes, and be able to repair bookbindings ranging in date from Renaissance to moder 21st century materials, including photo albums. The incumbent is expected to contribute to reular laboratory maintenance, locate and order raw materials, help with emergency preparedness planning and recovery, and participate meaningfully in the ongoing operation of a dynamic research library's conservation lab. Over time, the incumbent is expected to develop their technical knowledge, skills and abilities through reading, participation in in-house training opportunities, and attendance at professional workshops and conferences, and be able to effectively disseminate this information to colleagues.
Duties:
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1) Performs book and paper conservation treatments for rare books, archival documents, maps, and some photographic print material in accordance with standards of quality and productivity established by the Preservation Librarian. 2) Examines and documents, in writing and with photographs (as appropriate), the current condition of rare and intrinsically valuable material. Recommends treatment proposals to curatorial staff and with their concurrence, implements appropriate conservation treatment procedures balancing the material's current physical and chemical condition, historical structure and makeup, and projected future use. 3) Maintains close working relationships with all members of the Preservation Division. Maintains good communication with the collection's curators (Rare Books, Middle East, Western Americana, Manuscripts, Fine Arts Locked Case, and Government Documents Locked Case, Maps, etc.) and helps them determine collection-wide preservation priorities for rare materials. 4) Develops and maintains productive work-flow patterns and procedures. Maintains condition and treatment reports and monthly statistical records for accountability purposes (ARL statistics, etc.). 5)Trains hourly subordinates and monitors quality control and productivity issues. SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 6) Investigates, develops, and implements innovative and useful approaches to treatment, housing, and departmental organization and training to help improve the library's conservation program. Remains professionally engaged and participates in professional development activities. 7) Investigates sources of equipment, materials of appropriate permanence and durability, and tools required to appropriately perform conservation treatment. Helps maintain accountability for supplies in terms of reordering, storage, and use of off-cuts. 8) Helps maintain machinery and equipment throughout the lab. Helps supervise safe employee handling of various chemicals, tools, and equipment. 9) Participates as a member of the University of Utah's Disaster Response Team and, in emergency situations, helps implement recovery procedures campus-wide under the direction of the Preservation Librarian. 10) Participates in special projects where expertise in book and paper conservation is required, including, but not limited to designing and executing presentation bindings, boxes, mats, and frames, as well as work for private clientele. 11) In consultation with the Preservation Librarian, provides technical reference information to members of the library, university, city, and state, related but not limited to material perservation, conservation treatment referral, and disaster response and recovery.
